Can a Single Person Adopt or Foster?

Family Link, with its Legacy Ranch, is a nonprofit foster care and adoption organization based in Gonzales, Texas. The agency looks for homes for children who have been abused or mistreated, in direct collaboration with child protective services. One of the questions frequently asked at Family Link is whether a single person can adopt or be a foster parent.

The answers is yes. The agency also points out that a safe home with a caring single parent is more desirable than a dangerous home. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) has laid out requirements for adoptive and foster families applicable to prospective parents either married or single. Some of the basic requirements include being at least 21 years of age, showing financial stability, and being mature and responsible adults.

There must be a sharing of information pertaining to lifestyle, and agreement to a allow background checks on all household adults. Foster parents need to provide adequate sleeping space and agree to a discipline policy that is nonphysical in nature.
